Sometimes We Just Need To Dance

Hello! We’re half way through the week!  Yesterday I had my first day of school at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. The night before, I barely slept because I was so excited. My first day was great. I was in complete bliss – I was finally exactly where I needed and wanted to be. My teacher for my first course, which is the Fundamentals of Nutrition, is awesome! She’s so nice and down to earth. My classmates are all very nice as well. At the beginning of the class we all took a minute to tell everyone a little about ourselves and why were we there. Some of us had similar stories and some of us very different.

My first lesson I learned about water. Yes, water. We learned about the different types of water available to us – mineral, tap, filtered, well, spring etc. Water is so critical for us to live, but do you know what’s in your drinking water? My job today is to find out the source of my water in my area. Once I do some more research I am hoping to do a post on water. The information I was given was so interesting and important. I learned even more about my classmates when we did some group work. I love making new friends! I definitely love school already.

I’m going to back up a little to the day before. On Monday night I attended a yoga class with my friend. It was her birthday week so she was able to bring three people to yoga with her for free. We attended a Kundalini Yoga class and I must say that I’m in love. You need to try this type of yoga if you haven’t yet. I took the class at Semperviva. They have a few locations throughout Vancouver and when you get a membership you are free to go to whichever location you want.

According to my little booklet with their featured yoga classes, Kundalini is a dynamic, past-faced and effective form of yoga that produces quick results. Benefits include weight control, relief from stress and insomnia, enhanced creativity, lymphatic cleansing, liver detoxification, balancing the heart and mind, and developing will-power. It also stimulates the nervous system, glandular system and the immune system as it centers the mind and opens the spirit. These results are achieved through specific yoga posture sets. Each class includes centering oneself with mantra, warm up, a specific yoga postures set, deep relaxation and meditation.

My favourite part of the class was when we got to dance and go crazy! I couldn’t believe we were dancing at yoga. The instructor turned up some good dance music and we danced around, clapped our hands and just let our minds and bodies go free. My friend described it as ‘going to a club without the alcohol and creepy people trying to hit on you.’ I was in heaven as I danced around on my mat, letting all stresses in my life disappear. The last song we danced all around the room to the song “sexy thing.” Oh yes – we were singing along and just having fun (and getting exercise).

It wasn’t just the dancing that made this class so great. Certain parts you do need to push yourself and tell yourself not to give up. I came out of this class feeling completely rejuvenated and happy. I’m also still sore from this class two days later. I can feel it everywhere on my body and I love it!

This dancing business made me feel so good that I decided I needed to do it more often. I had a great day yesterday at school, but other stresses somehow popped up into my life – crazy how that happens. I over-reacted at first, but then I decided to dance. I turned on some music (the song ‘More’ by Usher makes me want to dance) and danced around my room. I felt great! It’s going to be a more regular routine for me!

All of us have varying degrees of stress in our life. Sometimes you just need to stop thinking and do something that makes you happy. What do you do to relieve stress?

Take some time for yourself today. Do something you love! I hope you all have a fabulous day!

    • Yes nature walks are great. Even a run too. I have been finding more ways of relieving stress! I have not done Zumba before, but I will soon! It looks really fun!
