Official Homeowners and Good Buys

Hey everyone! Well, it’s official, Josh and I are homeowners. The closing date was May 30. After many appointments last week and getting more and more bills to pay, it’s finally ours. I can’t believe how much everything costs these days – there’s insurance for everything and it isn’t cheap! Now we’re looking at paint colours and all the different renovations we want to complete. The kitchen is going to be our biggest expense as we are completely redesigning it. It’s an older house, so we’re hoping to fix it up and sell it for more in a few years. I just can’t wait to get started on everything. It feels good to not be paying rent and to be putting our money into an investment.

Today, Shelley (Josh’s mom) and I went to some garage sales and farmer’s markets. I used to tell my mom she was crazy buying used things when I was younger, but you can actually find some pretty cool stuff (well, sometimes). I hadn’t been to the markets here in Prince George yet, so I was excited to see what they have to offer. I have to say, although it’s not even comparable to what they are like in Vancouver, there is still quite a bit.

At the garage sales I bought a set of 6 wine glasses and a set of baking dishes.

At the farmer’s market I got a gluten-free banana cupcake with peanut butter icing and some raw local honey. I also got a loaf of gluten-free pumpernickel bread. I will be doing some posts on these local vendors in the near future as I think they deserve a mention because their products are delicious! I wanted to get a lot more such as some veggies and local meats, but I couldn’t decide on anything. I’m going to go next Saturday morning.

Also, this is not completely worth mentioning, but it’s driving me insane. We have an invasion of caterpillars here and it’s absolutely disgusting. The back of the house is covered in them, they are all over the grass, the fence, patio set and anything else in the backyard. I’m scared to go in and out of the house because they keep falling from everywhere. Josh is gone for 12 more days and I have to mow the lawn within the next couple days before it gets too long. I’m going to have to get all geared up in my rubber boots, rain suit, hood, gloves and glasses. I know I might be over exaggerating, but you have no idea how bad they are here. I feel like a prisoner in my own home!

Well, that’s all the news I have for today! Hope you’re enjoying your weekend (free of caterpillars).

Whistler Fun

Hello friends! How was your weekend? Mine was great! I worked Friday evening and then I got on a bus to Squamish Saturday morning to meet the girls. After they picked me up we went to the market in Squamish. I love going to farmers markets and seeing all the delicious foods and products they are offering. They had a lot more than I thought. It’s definitely comparable to the market in Vancouver. Elyse and I talked to the bee farmer and tasted a few different honeys and bee pollen too. Honey is such a super food!

There were so many different vendors. There was even a gluten-free bakery that had vegan options as well. Everything looked so yummy! I also bought a bracelet that had my name on it. Super cute! I never find anything that has my name spelt correctly, so I had to buy it.

I was in complete bliss as I was walking around the market and looking at the surrounding mountains. I love BC! Nicole and I also indulged in a maple syrup candy made on snow. It reminded me of my childhood going to the sugar shacks in Quebec with my family.

After the market, we stopped at this great café on the way to the car. They have raw, vegan and vegetarian options. Elyse and I bought super veggie wraps that were so simple, but absolutely mouth-watering.

We hung out at their place for a while. They live in a beautiful house with an incredible view. They have a gorgeous four bedroom house for the same price as the two bedroom apartment I’m moving into in Vancouver! Craziness! It’s ridiculous how expensive it is to live in Vancouver. I was supposed to move in with them for the summer, but I had a good job opportunity here and I want to stay in one city for a while. I haven’t live in the same place for over 9 months since I lived at home in high school. I’m moving apartments next Friday though and I’m so excited. Marika (a girl from school) and I are moving into a lovely two bedroom place closer to downtown and right along the seawall. It’s going to be a great summer! I’m also signing a one-year lease, so I will be in this place for at least a year! Packing up my stuff and moving is fun sometimes, but it gets a little annoying. Luckily I don’t have that much stuff; mostly clothes and kitchen equipment.

I must tell you more about my weekend fun. After relaxing for a bit we got ready and made our way to Whistler. Nicole had to work, so we decided to make a night of it. I haven’t had the opportunity to spend any time in Whistler before, so I was stoked. Elyse showed me around a bit and we took a walk around. We ended up going out with a bunch of friends and dancing the night away! I haven’t had a girl’s night out in a while. I had to catch the bus back to Vancouver in the morning for work. I was quite tired yesterday, but luckily I have today off to relax and catch up on everything. It was so nice to get out of the city. I hadn’t left Vancouver in a few months and it was much needed. It was a little mini getaway!

I’m at a coffee shop currently getting some work done and I must get on to some homework. Hope everyone’s Monday is absolutely fabulous! I have a yummy breakfast recipe to be posted so check back tomorrow!

Weekend of Sunshine and the Farmers Market!

Hello! How was your weekend? Mine was great! The weather in Vancouver was once again absolutely gorgeous. Summer has finally come! I had Saturday off  and I worked Sunday afternoon, so I got to enjoy the sunshine.

On Saturday I met a friend downtown and we walked along the seawall (that’s what everyone in Vancouver does because it’s so beautiful). We also went out for sushi. Sushi is definitely one of my favourite foods to get when I decide to eat out. When I first left the apartment, it looked like it was going to rain, and by the time I got downtown the skies were blue. Absolutely perfect!

On Sunday I went to the farmers market for the first time in Vancouver. I went to the one in Kitslano. They have one at Trout Lake on Saturdays and one in Kits on Sundays. There are also two more opening up in June at other locations too. It was a perfect morning to go to the market.

I walked around and checked out the various venders and sampled a few things along the way. There were fresh local vegetables, herbs, baked goods, honey, meat and seafood, maple syrup, essential oils and much more. The first place I went to was the honey stand. I ran out of honey at home, so I was in need of some quality honey. I asked her about her honey and how the bees were fed. You want to make sure they are feeding themselves for the most part; otherwise you know the keepers are taking too much from the bees.

I bought a whole bag of some local cherry tomatoes. I’m going to make a delicious salad with some of them tomorrow. I also bought some eggplant from the same place. The last thing I got was rose sea salt. Sea salt is good for you as it has so many minerals in it (in moderation of course). The vendor had all sorts of flavours.

Since this was my first experience at the Vancouver market, I indulged in something extra delicious. They had many places to eat, such as organic tacos, but I decided to bite into a crepe. This place has savoury and sweet crepes (and not just regular ones). I went for a sweet one, but next time I will do a savoury. I had one filled with cranberry-apple compote, ricotta cheese and local honey. I can hardly describe how incredible it tasted. The other one I was debating on getting was filled with caramelized onions, spinach, goat’s cheese, olives and sundried tomatoes. They all sounded delish! I had an almond milk latte to go along with my delightful crepe.

For dinner last night I decided to barbeque. I don’t eat red meat very often, but I felt like I could use a nice steak. I bought a small rib-eye steak to grill. Along with that, I had yams roasted with some onions and garlic as well as grilled eggplant. It was a very satisfying dinner. I truly indulged yesterday!

I have today off. I have to finish up my take-home exam for school and do a little cleaning. I’m also going to attend a yoga class. It’s supposed to be sunny again, so I must refrain from procrastinating and get my homework done so I can go outside.

Have a wonderful Monday! Hopefully it’s a start to a wonderful week!
